    15 february
hello loves! the activity check is now over and the inactive accounts have been deleted. as well, any threads that haven't been replied to since jamuary 25th have been archived.

after the activity check, the bans still remain on gryffindor and durmstrang students (for members that have two or more characters) we noticed while doing the ratios, that we really need: beaxbatons males, slytherin females and ravenclaws the sooner these character rations get higher, the sooner the band will be removed.

if you have an idea for one of the banned characters, keep in mind that durmstrang students can have personalities that fit them in one of the hogwarts houses and gryffindor students can be in beauxbatons because there is no "personality" to a beauxbatons student.

    xoxoxo, tytd staff.

Stealing wouldn’t have been something he’d have done if his life had turned out the way it had been intended.

Ivar Jörgen Ostergard was a well built boy. Sturdy. Strong. Dependable. He’d have still been a beater no doubt but he wouldn’t have worn the same baggy, ill fitting clothes. He’d have had the finest hand tailored suits when he felt like it. He’d go to parties, hang out with his friends and probably use his Meta skills to spy on other prominent pureblood families. Never this. Never changing his face and stature and demeanor to steal jewelry not because he felt like it but because rent was do soon and they were running out of spare money because of all of the new things they’d had to buy for the move to Hogwarts to run smoothly. That thought never would’ve crossed Ivar’s mind if he’d grown up rich and powerful. But it was his reality and it was one that he shared with his father and his twin and they did what they had to. And you couldn’t judge them for it because their options were slim to none. You couldn’t honestly think that Elias wanted his only two children, the only two people that loved him in the world, to go on such dangerous escapades every night to not only feed themselves but him as well. Especially since he’d come from a life of privilege. Most parents wanted better for their children but the Ostergard’s had it worse.

That was…in the opinion of some.

He could feel his heart racing, a devilish grin on his face. Well, it wasn’t his face exactly. It was some man’s that he’d seen coming in and out of the store quiet often with his wife’s face. The face that was standing next to him finishing her look. But that wasn’t his wife and he wasn’t him and it would all work so perfectly if they didn’t fuck this up. Then again, it wasn’t like this was their first rodeo. ”My name is Harold Turnpike. I’m 56 years old. I live in the Upper East side of London. My wife’s name is…what’s your name again? he said, cracking a smile over at his sister knowing she wouldn’t appreciate the slip up at a time like this, even if it was just a joke. ”My oh my we’ve been married 30 years and I still can’t remember your name. Maybe I have alzheimer’s. OH can I play with that a bit?” he said, his Swedish rolling off of his tongue easily for the time being. He could turn it on and off without blinking and in this case it would be especially important because these two were semi-regulars in the classy store. They’d been watching them for ages and this would be the big takeaway that would hopefully help their father out before they left for good. It had to be. Or they were all screwed.

”Alright alright…I think we look good….You ready wifey?" he said, turning to his partner in crime with an arm extended for her to take.

WE CAN'T STOP, AND WE WONT STOP
can't you see it's me who owns the night

nathalie ostergard hated herself for what she did.

she felt like trash, street scum and a dirty hobo. technically, all three things were true and she knew it. growing up on the street was difficult, but she had her dad and her brother to make things a little bit better. ivar and their father were really the only things in the world that made life a lot easier for nat, but she wished that her life was a lot different. her mother had walked out on her and her twin brother when she was a kid, but it made things a lot more complicated for them. they had no money and no house and their father was getting older and sicker and nathalie just had a lot of emotions and since she always felt like she needed to be n control of her situation, it was difficult for her to just let things go. that was why she and her brother used their magical gift to transform into other people and steal things that they needed. they would be other people to get things from people. never more than they needed. sometimes they would luck out and they could get their hands on some jewelry or something that they could pawn and sell for a lot of money but for the most part, it was usually just things that they needed. food, clothing, money for textbooks. life was rough for them but they had each other so they made it work. nat felt fake and wrong and she wished more than anything that she could come into a lot of money somehow and look after her father and her brother and not need to steal things in order to get by. she hoped more than anything that they wouldn't be stuck in this cycle of poverty for the rest of her life. she just didn't want to be a street rat.

it had taken nathalie a long time to decide on who to look like this time. she ended up settling with a red-headed woman who looked like she was in her late fifties. nathalie much preferred her own body but this would have to do. she did gave a look over at ivar, who looked nothing like himself and it was almost laughable, but this was something they did often and she knew that she could always connect with her brother in their head if they needed to, the magical link between them was so strong and she felt safer when she did this. her brother was her best friend, her most important friend and that was something that she wuld always cherish. "come on, ivar don't be a smart ass we don't have time for this. my name is claudia turnpike. and if you don't take this one seriously i'm going to kick you in the head so hard that i give you alzheimer's" she said, letting out a shaky breath because she didn't exactly feel comfortable doing any of this and she didn't need her brother messing with her emotions when they were about to go in. he knew that she had control issues and she needed to plan everything to a tee and make sure that nothing went wrong, otherwise she was prone to a panic attack. this one was going to be a bog one for them, money they needed before they went away to school again in the fall and they needed to look after their father. they had to go to school but their father was getting too old for this business and someone needed to look after him. he spent years loving and protecting them, they needed to return the favour.

"i'm ready when you are, dear" she said with a roll of her eyes, preparing to go into one of the biggest ones of her life, silently praying that everything was going to turn out okay. she took ivar's hand and headed inside, not sure if she was really ready for this, but she had to be.

There weren’t many opportunities for Ivar to be a relaxed individual. He was either too worried about sleeping because they were on the street and someone could try to meddle with his family. Throughout the day they were always looking for their next scheme, their next plot to survive. They ate late in the evenings because they were worried about what food, if any, they’d be able to scrounge together for a meal. The worry was constant and it never went away but sometimes, usually in inappropriate moments, he let his worry subside a little. It calmed the boy who was usually wound so tight that someone looking at him wrong could cause him to snap and have a freak out. Between Nathalie’s panic attacks and Ivar’s angry lashes they were a tornado of a pair. A natural disaster times two. No one was safe from them if they were both in a mood but they tended to balance each other out. It was for everyone’s mutual benefit and the safety of the people around them. Ivar knew that despite their circumstances, if they made it out of these slums somehow, they were going to do it by wreaking havoc on the world. There was no doing this peacefully or quietly or calmly. They deserved to get to the top by wiping out everyone who was in their way. Nat hated herself for what they were forced to do. Ivar hated everyone else.

But he tried to find silver linings from time to time. Kept his sanity or what little of it he had going for him. He could feel his sister’s anxiety in his gut but he wasn’t too worried about it. She got like this every time they were about to pull a bigger heist than simply slipping into a thrift shop or someone’s empty home to grab things. This had taken time and planning and they would have to work this out flawlessly or they were screwed. Probably not the best time to joke around. But he had anyways. ”Relax, sister. You know I tease. I’ve got it down. Don’t I always?” he reminded her. How many of these things had they pulled off? Several dozen since they were children he was sure of it and their father had allowed them to actually change faces for bigger heists and not just petty pickpocketing. There were two things, their father had told Ivar, that a thief had to have. Fear and adrenaline. One fueled the other. One guided the other. You couldn't thieve if you were overconfident. Overconfidence got you caught. It could get you killed. But adrenaline pushed you over the edge. It drove you to heights you didn't know you could reach. And soon, the barrier was broken all together. Nat had the fear thing going and Ivar ran on pure adrenaline. It was how they managed to stay out of jail this long, living day by day with the scrapes they could snag from the world. But today would be a payday for sure. His sister took his arm and he took a deep breath before guiding her around the corner and into the luxurious store. It was showtime.

It was strange being around rich people and playing at being one of them. It was strange to want everything they had and to watch them waste it away or take it for granted. It was why he never had a problem taking from them "Mr. and Mrs. Turnpike. Why...we weren't expecting you to come in until tomorrow," said an attendant who clearly noted the higher end clientele. They'd selected a good couple it seemed. "We've book a last minute vacation to Bermuda and Claudia here just couldn't stand to not have her favorite jewels with her for the trip. Are they finished being uh...polished?" he asked casually, glancing down at Nathalie with a smile.

WE CAN'T STOP, AND WE WONT STOP
can't you see it's me who owns the night

nathalie wished that she could be normal. she knew that it wasn't ever going to happen, someone who grew up like nathalie ostergard did didn't really know the definition of normal. she grew up on the streets, being raised by her singer father and she and her twin bother were pretty much forced to use their magical ability to steal and pickpocket so that they would be able to afford to live. without the money that they stole, they wouldn't be able to eat, go to school or have any clothing to wear. especially nathalie. ivar could use clothing that their father had but nat was a girl, and since her mother wasn't around she didn't really have anyone who she would be able to borrow clothes from. nathalie sometimes wished that her mother had decided that their father was worth her time so that she would have been able to look after their children. now their father was stuck living on the streets with no money due to being branded a death eater by the ministry because of his own father being one. it took all of their money away and there was nothing left for the family except their lives and their magic. they had the ability to change into other people so that they would be able to steal things without being caught. though nathalie hated losing her body so that she could do illegal things to have food in her stomach, it was a necessary evil that she knew was required for her immediate survival. over the summer, nathalie and ivar spent a majority of their time out stealing things and doing often really risky jobs so that they would be able to have enough money to have their father survive without them for a few months while they went to school. nathalie knew that if they couldn't get enough money, she would volunteer not to go to school in september so that she could stay home and look after her father and make sure that he was getting enough. he was getting too old for this, and he was sick from living on the street for nearly seventeen years. he had spent so much of his time looking after them, she would give anything for her papa, even giving up her education for his safety.

"sorry" nathalie mumbled, looking down a little bit. she didn't want to yell at her brother but things like this really did stress her out. she worried more for her brother than she did for herself, but that was just natural for nathalie. she never quite worried of she made it out safe or alive, as long as ivar did. nathalie was more of the brains of the operation, while ivar was the brawn. it wasn't that he was stupid, no her brother was brilliant but nathalie lacked the physical strength that he possessed but that was alright because she was quick on her feet and smart enough to come up with stories and scenrios. she had a slick tongue and could make up a lie on the spot and people always believed her. she and ivar made their way into the store, which apparently also doubled as a bank-style location for rich people who wanted to get their stuff polished, repaired ad stored for special occasions. posh places like this made nathalie feel uncomfortable because she always thought that even if she did make it out for whatever reason she would still never have a luxiorious ife like this. she didn't know if she would ever want it, because being poor was humbling and she realized that there was more to life than money and that would be something that never left her. she valued family and friendships and the small things, even though having enough money to be able to properly buy things would make her life a lot easier ,nat knew that she had a life full of criminal activity ahead of her. "i'd like to see the jewels, the last time you lot polished them, you did a right horrible job with the polishing" she kept her gaze firm and though her english accent wasn't the best, it was fairly believable. no one seemed too alarmed at their presence nd no one looked suspicious. nathalie always had an escape plan, looking over to the door with the big red exit sign. no one was standing by it and they could make an easy escape out the door if they needed to. "the safes are over there, we need to take it and look casual" she said to ivar in their minds, the link between the two of them was often hard to penetrate when they were in different bodies but they were close to each other so she figured he would hear her.

He wanted better for Nathalie. He knew that she felt close to the same way. They’d gotten to the point that they were used to this sort of lifestyle and any kind of step above that would just be odd. But they yearned for it all of the same. Mostly because they knew they deserved it. They put in more work than the Minister of Magic himself each and every single day. And they were still struggling. It just wasn’t fair. Their father was sick and getting worse as the days went on. Their father was a good, deserving man who had been kicked down to this life by people no better than he was. One day the world would turn their karma around. Today probably wouldn’t be that day. Ivar tended to take that extra anger and unleash it onto people. He let it build and simmer and if he wasn’t playing Quidditch it got particularly bad because that was one of the only ways he could let off any steam. So this summer was bound to be rough. There were entirely too many things working against him and his family that could put him on edge. The move, the lack of money, his father’s sanity slowly but surely slipping out of his grasp. It was maddening for someone that was raised in a typical family let alone someone who grew up the way he had. It made him tough though and for that he’d always be grateful. Grateful for the nights his father came home super late because he’d almost gotten caught trying to provide for them. Grateful for the opportunity to sleep on a bed when he could. The grateful never really registered on his face. Only the stoicism did. But there was nothing to be done for that. At least, not that he cared to ever change it. Ivar peered over at his sister before dotting a quick kiss to the side of her head. There was no reason to apologize and he made sure she heard as much in her mind before they began to move. This was always a stressful moment. The seconds leading up to their acting. It was a matter of feeding their family or landing themselves an overnight stay in Azkaban. They had to do this flawlessly.

Just one more time, he always told himself. Get through this one. Don’t worry about what you’ve done before. Don’t think about what you’ll have to steal tomorrow. You had to be in the here and now in the present or else you’d get caught. You had to focus. And as soon as the door signaled their arrival, he could feel the roles they were playing settle into themselves. They were zoned in. He did the initial introduction as was the role of the man even though Nathalie cold every well have conned this entire building without him having to say a single word. They were still acting after all. Head raised, they gave off an air of authority although he was able to note that Nat’s accent was a bit off. He glanced at her only briefly before giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. No one had noticed he was sure of it. But still, while she worked on making sure the exits they had planned for themselves in case of an emergency were clear, Ivar had another job. He was looking at the people. Who would try to stop them? Whose wands were ready to pull out at a moments notice to engage them? Which ones could he pummel and who might actually put up a decent fight? His sister made sure they got away but Ivar made sure they got away unscathed. So far, their track record was fairly decent.

The safe. He had to get to the safe. ”Claudia love you go check on your jewels. I see a watch over here that’s caught my eye. I could do with a new one,” he said, nodding his head to indicate that he’d heard and understood her. ”You just give me a shout when you’ve collected your things. Don’t want to miss that dinner party tonight and then we can be on our way,” he said with a pleasant grin although to his sister it was anything but. He was feeling confident. And he radiated it. Probably enough to make his sister nervous because she knew how he could get but it was too late for that. Ivar had already drifted off towards the safes without a single soul stopping him. And they wouldn’t dream of it. At least, not with this face.

WE CAN'T STOP, AND WE WONT STOP
can't you see it's me who owns the night

she had a lot of faith in her brother. it was saying a lot because ivar was likely one of the most reckless people she knew. however she knew that despite his temper and the fact that he was fairly reckless, he cared about her and he wouldn't do anything to jeopardize their relationship. ivar and nathalie were different than most siblings, not only were they twins but they held a bond that most siblings didn't have. they could communicate through their minds, and they shared a gift that helped them out of sticky situations and helped them survive through their life. it was difficult being in the situations that they found themselves in but they managed and somehow, nathalie could always rely on her brother to make sure that nothing bad happened to her. she wished for better for them, but she knew that it was unlikely to happen. she wasn't much of a dreamer in the sense where she often didn't think too highly of herself or her ability to become anything higher than what she currently was. she knew that she was going to be this low-life thief for the rest of her life and she had accepted that fact. it did't mean that she couldn't dream for more though. she just wanted to imagine that she could have a life that didn't involve doing illegal things. she wanted to be a normal girl but she just didn't know how to go about it.

nathalie wished that she could be normal. she knew that it wasn't ever going to happen, someone who grew up like nathalie ostergard did didn't really know the definition of normal. she grew up on the streets, being raised by her singer father and she and her twin bother were pretty much forced to use their magical ability to steal and pickpocket so that they would be able to afford to live. without the money that they stole, they wouldn't be able to eat, go to school or have any clothing to wear. especially nathalie. ivar could use clothing that their father had but nat was a girl, and since her mother wasn't around she didn't really have anyone who she would be able to borrow clothes from. nathalie sometimes wished that her mother had decided that their father was worth her time so that she would have been able to look after their children. now their father was stuck living on the streets with no money due to being branded a death eater by the ministry because of his own father being one. it took all of their money away and there was nothing left for the family except their lives and their magic. they had the ability to change into other people so that they would be able to steal things without being caught. though nathalie hated losing her body so that she could do illegal things to have food in her stomach, it was a necessary evil that she knew was required for her immediate survival. over the summer, nathalie and ivar spent a majority of their time out stealing things and doing often really risky jobs so that they would be able to have enough money to have their father survive without them for a few months while they went to school. nathalie knew that if they couldn't get enough money, she would volunteer not to go to school in september so that she could stay home and look after her father and make sure that he was getting enough. he was getting too old for this, and he was sick from living on the street for nearly seventeen years. he had spent so much of his time looking after them, she would give anything for her papa, even giving up her education for his safety.

ivar getting to the safes and getting the jewels and money was the plan - and nathalie needed to be the distraction. it wasn't hard. she knew that it wouldn't be too difficult. taking on someone else's body made it easier to deceive and get their way out of things. making her way behind the older attendant, she eyed the visitors that were in the shop - and she noted how none of them seemed alarmed at their presence. no one was uneasy or worried that they were fake. this was what she had been hoping for. she tried to ignore how over-confident her brother was being and she tried to warn him to take it easy without speaking. she followed the shopkeeper towards the back and he opened the vault, showing her some of the biggest jewels she had ever seen. he offered to put it on for her and she smiled, pulling her fake red hair up and offering him a fake flirty smile. she realised that they needed some more time, so she upped the charm just a little bit. "now, you're a lovely young man, what do you think i should wear with these...a black dress or an emerald green one?" she said, batting her eyelashes, watching the young man clamor over his words as she tapped her foot inside her shoes, hoping ivar would hurry up so she could stop stalling.

The Ostergards were never going to be normal. That was something Ivar had given up dreaming about a long time ago. They were never going to be rich. And even if they ended up well off, this feeling wouldn’t go away. The pleasant feeling he got whenever he changed faces and voices and successfully stole something from an asshole. It was the best feeling in the world to him and he wasn’t sure that any amount of money or security would actually make him stop. It was apart of him now, something he’d done since he could understand the concept of stealing to survive. But he knew no matter how many times he got that familiar itch in his fingers to take something, there had to be a limit. His family would beg that of him like they did when he got so angry that he blacked out and beat someone to a bloody pulp. There always had to be a limit but there weren’t many people that could force him to that limit. There weren’t many people that could reign in his terror or his thirst for vengeance. He wasn’t sure if he wanted them to on some days.

Ivar snapped out of it just as he headed for the safes. It wasn’t smart, letting his mind wander while he was in the middle of a job. But it was either that or keep the resting bitch face on his features and cause everyone to eye him warily. That was the thing about their craft. You had to be likable in the moment, but not memorable. Someone that people automatically trusted and just as soon forgot about when you walked out of the door. If they remembered too much, things got sticky. This was all about being the classy people that they saw on a day to day basis. The people they went to the back room and rolled their eyes about before getting on with the rest of their work day. But for the twins, it was all about survival. Ivar eyes some of the watches and glanced over as his sister disappeared into the vaults. She’d gone left. And after a few brief moments and a sigh, Ivar went through the same vaults but instead took a right to where the safes were. Excuse me, sir? Your wife is down the other way,” said an astute attendant, his smile fake and not reaching his eyes. Clearly he hated his job. ”Ah…yes of course.” Ivar bit his tongue, trying to come up with a lie but none came immediately and so he slowly headed back towards the left where Nathalie had gone. He could feel the attendants eyes on his back. And before he could do much else, he had stumbled into the room where Nat and the shopkeeper were.

Quickly he fell into his sisters thoughts, explaining what had happened. They may not have been able to reach the safes, but with a little quicker acting, they could sweep out this entire room. His confidence had only wavered for a moment. He may not have been the brains of the operation but he was certainly the motivation.
